(i) Types of strokes:
 

 

A stroke begins when the pen or the ink brush touches the paper or writing surface, and ends when it leaves it. They are the basic building blocks in writing a Chinese word.

 

The following chart has grouped 9 different ways to write a stroke in Chinese into 5 categories (or 5 stroke types). Notice from the chart that some strokes are not necessarily written in a straight line. 

 

 

One tip of advice for those learning to write Chinese: Chinese words are often printed nowadays in many different styles, and for beginners, kaishu style, which resembles most to how words are naturally written in ink brushes, offer the clearest view of how the strokes are written.
